Debjit Majumdar | Golden Hands of ATK | Indian super League | ISL

Debjit Majumder is a name that no ATK fan or KBFC fan can ever forget. Because, in the 2016 ISL finals it is Debjit Majumder who broke KBFC fans hearts to win the ISL titles for the club ATK.

Debjit Majumder was born on 6th march 1988 in a small town called Hindmotor, near Kolkata.

Kolkata is also known as “Mecca of Indian football”. In a country full of cricket fans, Kolkata remains one of the very few cities that gives importance for footbal as much as it gives to cricket. So, naturally, since childhood he developed interest for football and wanted to be a professional footballer.

At a very young age, he was trained at Uttarpara Netaji Brigade team under coach Anup Nag. He started his professional career at Calcutta Football League(CFL) with Food Corporation of India(fCI) football team. Later, he went on to play for United Sikkim and Kalighat MS.

Majumder’s early career was not easy. For the 2011-12 season he was signed by East Bengal. He made only 4 appearances for the club. After the season he was released by the club.

For the next two years, Majumder played for the I League second division team Bhavanipore FC. He gave some good performances for the club.

In 2014 Majumder was signed by Mohan Began. Majumder won man of the match award for his performance against the club’s arch rivals East Bengal in the Kolkata Derby on 28 march 2015. He made some spectacular performances that won him best goalkeeper of I-League 2015.

In 2015, Majumder played for Mumbai City FC. But he came to everyone’s attention in the 2016 ISL season where he played for ATK.

It was the finals between ATK and Kerala Blasters at Kochi, Kerala Blasters’ home stadium. We know the support KBFC gets for it’s home matches and the finals were no different. The stadium was like a yellow sea.

The match went for penalty shootout. Kerala blasters had a very good and experienced goal keeper. So people thought Kerala Would win in the penalty shootout. But Debjit Majumder proved everyone wrong by blocking two penalty kicks that helped ATK lift the ISL trophy for the second time in three years.

So I was sure that ATK would retain him. ATK signed Debjit Majumder for the next three years. This would keep him in ATK till 2019-20 season. I wish him all the best for his upcoming ISL outing.
