Redmi Note 5 Pro Review
We at The Review TV received hundreds of requests to do the Redmi Note 5 Pro review. Not only Mi fans but gadget lovers from around the globe were waiting for the launch of the Redmi Note 5 Pro as Redmi Note 4 was an epic success and it broke several records in the countries it was launched. Especially in India, it sold millions of Note 4 phones within days and currently is the most selling smartphone.
Xiaomi took more than a year’s gap to launch the successor of Redmi Note 4 because Note 4 was a big success and the company wanted Note 5 Pro to meet the expectations of the customers. Xiaomi has launched two variants of Redmi Note 5. One is Redmi Note 4 and the other is Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Pro model comes with some additional features that stand out in the crowd.
Redmi Note 5 Pro has got everything to be a winner. It comes with the new Snapdragon chipset that is very powerful and power efficient. That itself is enough to convince anyone to buy this phone as the phones that feature this chipset will cost at least the double. It also features the current trend 18:9 display with full HD+ resolution and a new bezel-less design. At the launch event, the only unexpected feature they announced was the face unlock feature. As of now, it is not available but the company will give the feature through an OTA update by the end of March.

Just by looking at the pros and cons, you can guess how would it perform but for a clearer details lets jump into the Redmi Note 5 Pro review by The Review TV.
Design and Display
Earlier we have seen some reviews in which some critics liked the design of some phones but some did not. So we at The Review TV asked all our employees to give their opinion on the design of Redmi Note 5. I expected at least 10% would say they did not like the design. But their opinion surprised me. Everyone who shared their opinion said they liked the new design and it is a milestone in the budget category phones.
Let me give you my thoughts, Redmi Note 5 comes with a 5.99-inch 18:9 aspect ratio display with Full HD+ resolution with 403-pixel density. The display is sharp and bright to use under bright daylight. Last year some flagship phones came with the 18:9 displays and Redmi Note 5 is the first smartphone to introduce it to the budget category. At the top of the display, there is a protection glass but the company has not mentioned if it’s a Gorilla Glass. Redmi Note 4 also had glass protection but Xiaomi had not mentioned the company that manufactured it.
Redmi Note 5 Pro has a moderate 77.4% screen-to-body-ratio.
At the top of the display, you will find a 20 MP front camera with a flash, some sensors, and an ear speaker. Below the display are the normal capacitive touch keys. Xiaomi has decided to keep things minimal and there is nothing fancy at the front.
The aluminum frame makes the phone look sturdy and premium. To the right, we have the volume rocker and the power button. the left side is minimal as there is only one port for sim card tray. At the top, we have the 3.5mm audio jack. I am happy and thankful to Xiaomi for not removing the headphone jack. At the bottom, we have speaker grills and a micro USB 2.0 port.
Things look cool at the back. We get a dual camera setup at the back and a fingerprint sensor at the middle. The dual camera may remind you of some Apple iPhones but who cares it when you get such a beautiful design for under $300.
To say in one word, the design of Redmi Note 5 is SEXY. It looks premium and can turn eyes when you are using it in public. A minor problem we had with it was the size. never ever think of using this phone in one hand. It gives you a good grip with the rounded edges but because the display is 5.99 inch, your finger will not reach the top of the display. If you are the one who watches a lot of videos on smartphones or play games, then Redmi Note 5 Pro is perfect for you.
Redmi Note 5 comes with the same processor as Note 4 but the Pro comes with the newly launched Snapdragon 636 chipset. Redmi Note 5 Pro is the first phone to ship with this chipset. The new CPU uses the 14nm FinFET architecture which makes it more powerful and power efficient. Xiaomi at the launch event called it a true performance beast because of its great thermal performance. It is an Octa-core 1.8 GHz Kryo 260 Cpu means it has 8 cores running at 1.8 GHz.
It is supported by the new Adreno 509 GPU. This makes it best of both worlds. Speaking of RAM options, you will get either a 4 GB RAM model or a 64 GB RAM model with 32 GB or 64 GB variants. Xiaomi has used the LPDDRX4 RAM which is the fastest RAM available for a smartphone.
All these make Redmi Note 5 a performance beast. We were surprised by the Antutu benchmarks results. The Redmi Note 5 gives you around 67000 whereas the Pro gives you 109000. This itself can give you an idea how fast the phone is. The well-optimized MIUI makes the software part fine.
Speaking of the day to day performance, it runs all the tasks without a slight lag. Using multiple apps is a breeze on Redmi Note 5. If you are somebody that loves split screen then you are going to love Redmi Note 5 Pro as it runs split screen functionality without any problem. I have used the same feature on some Samsung smartphones but they made the phone very slow.
Playing games also does not make Redmi Note 5 Pro slow. it can play any games you throw at it. Even though it is made up of aluminum, it does not become hot. It stays cool when you are playing high-end games.
Xiaomi had given one more statement, that is Redmi Note 5 Pro is India’s camera beast. Well, it is true as of now. It comes with the trendy dual camera set-up out of which, one is a 12(f/2.2) MP IMX 486 sensor and a 5(f/2.0) MP camera. The 12 MP camera is by Sony and it is one of the newly released lenses from Sony. Along with the camera, there is a dual-LED dual-tone flash.
The camera performance from Redmi Note 5 Pro is really good. the only problem with Redmi series phones was they were not shipped with good cameras. Moto and Honor phones were offering better cameras for the same price. but this year Xiaomi has listened to its customers. Xiaomi says, it has the best camera of any Redmi phones.
The camera works great in almost all the conditions. If the light is good then you will get DSLR like images. Xiaomi has made many software improvements to its camera app. The photos come out sharp with great color accuracy. If you compare it to the earlier model Redmi models then you will know the hard work Xiaomi has done in the camera department.
If you like to shoot images at night or in the low light, here it balls a bit behind. The sensor has an aperture of f2.2 means it cannot capture a lot of light. For example, moto g5 plus has an f1.7 lens. When the numbers are less, the lens captures more light and the indoor shots or low light shots come out well. this does not mean the photos are not good. The photos tend to have some grainy feel but are good to use for social media.
There is a depth effect feature in Redmi Note 5 Pro. When you capture a picture it focuses on just one object or a specific are and blurs the rest. it gives the image some bokeh effect. Xiaomi said the second lens helps to give the bokeh effect. But in my usage, it makes blur using the software.Sometimes it goes hard on the picture and blurs the background totally and it looks like you have already edited it using some apps.
If you like taking videos then you will love Redmi Note 5 pro as it comes with Electronic Image Stabilization. This features removes the shakiness of your hand and makes the video stable. Do not confuse it with the Optical Image Stabilization. In OIS there would be some hardware to avoid the shakiness while shooting the video but in EIS a software controls the video stable by removing the corners of the video.
The major upgrade on Redmi Note 5 Pro is the 20 MP f/2.0 front-facing camera with an LED flash. Xiaomi has also added Portrait mode to attract the selfie lovers. The result is fantastic. I think this is the first time a major smartphone company is offering a 20 MP front-facing camera in a budget phone. Photos at daylight and low light situations come out well and can make you click more and more selfies.
Xiaomi during the launch compared the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s front camera to the iPhone X. During our test at The Review TV, we felt that it is too much to compare Redmi to apple as iPhone X still gives better results. The Beautify 4.0 now has some added features that help make your skin look smooth. I personally don’t use the feature much as it makes my skin look creamy.
A surprising feature on the Redmi Note 5 Pro is the Face Unlock system. As of now, the feature is work in progress. Xiaomi has said they will give an update by the end of march that will make this feature work flawlessly. Xiaomi said it works faster than fingerprint sensor and takes just 0.5 seconds to unlock the device
we expected Redmi note 5 Pro to ship with Android 8.0 but instead, Xiaomi decided to go with the stable version of Android 7. Software performance is fine and we never felt lag at all. However, we prefer pure Android experience over MIUI as MIUI is a very heavy skin and can slow down your phone in the long run.
We get a bunch of sensors in Redmi Note 5 Pro. There is fingerprint sensor at the back that works perfectly fine, accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, etc. Again we don’t have USB 3.0. Recently, even the budget phones come with the new USB versions. USB 2.0 is slow and is an old technology.
Redmi phones mean bigger battery phones. Xiaomi did not disappoint the fans here. Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a 4000 mAh non-removable battery. In our test, it can play videos for up to 15 hours. If you are a casual user, it should last you for 2 days and if you are a heavy gamer, then it should give you juice for at least one full day.
When most companies including Apple and Samsung release phones on a specific cycle, Xiaomi waited more than a year to release a perfect successor. the new Redmi Note 5 Pro ticks all the right boxes and is a great value for money. if you are looking to buy a smartphone under the budget of $250 or $300, this should be the first one to be in your list.
